For 23 years, Arnell has been a safety net for lost dogs and cats, providing shelter, reclaim, medical care, enrichment and adoption for animals in need. Our main sources of funding are donations, adoption fees, and fundraising events. Our animals receive shelter, food, water, TLC, multiple daily walks, medical needs, pet enrichment, and a brand new home, which means a new start at life for them.

Last year giveBIG donations helped us update our outdated technology. This year, we are seeking to expand and upgrade our dog exercise pens to fulfill shelter enrichment for our canines. Our wonderful volunteers have used the Amery outdoor hockey arena to allow the shelter dogs an extra large fenced area to run. The outdoor hockey rink was taken down, which means we can no longer utilize the space. Any extra funds raised during giveBIG will be used for other shelter pet enrichment implementations at AMHS.  Any amount you can spare would be beneficial to our mission.

Shelter enrichment programs help reduce the stress and boredom of kennel life. All shelter animals benefit from enrichment programs. Group play, a time when animals get to play with each other in pairs or large groups, is a great way to get them exercised and keep them mentally happy and healthy.

With shelter animals, behaviors such as hyper-arousal, depression, and obsessive/compulsive behaviors are not uncommon when enrichment is not present.

Dogs and puppies may display behaviors that make adoptions more challenging simply because they are not given the opportunity to chew, be mentally engaged, or interact calmly with humans.

The shelter environment can be stressful for dogs, but shelter staff and volunteers can help ease that stress by providing enrichment opportunities and activities. Many of these enrichment activities also help dogs become more adoptable. Enrichment programs can help relieve shelter dog boredom and stress, which can make a major difference in a shelter dog's daily life.

Playgroups are one of the most important ways that animal shelters keep dogs mentally stimulated and socialized. They give potential adopters the opportunity to see the real dog instead of the cooped up version in the kennel. They allow shelters with minimal resources to offer dogs high-quality enrichment. One handler can manage several dogs playing at once, and a small group of handlers can manage large playgroups with minimal effort.

If you are interested in helping the mental health of our shelter dogs, please donate to our cause. In return for your generosity, you will have the heartwarming feeling of knowing that you helped a homeless pet have an enjoyable and healthy, temporary home while at the shelter.
